O.K. Video – biannual Jakarta International Video Festival that was established in 2003 by ruangrupa, an artists’ initiative based in Jakarta that focuses on supporting the development of the arts in the specific context of culture in Indonesia through research, study and documentation, along with intensive collaboration and cooperation with artists through organizing exhibitions, artist residency programs, art projects†and workshops.
The Festival held in July 2003 was the first international video art festival in Jakarta. It consisted of an exhibition, special presentations, workshops, discussion, artists’ talks, and a music video screening. In 200, the exhibition held in the National Gallery of Indonesia featured 60 video works by 56 artists from 19 countries. In 2005 with the theme Sub-Version the exhibition section only, shows 33 video works from 17 countries.

A. Objectives
Developing the consciousness towards the technology and media function as a social and cultural practice
Empowering the society to build a social, political, cultural, and historical consciousness towards the reality that happened in our surrounding through video.
Giving an alternative audio visual experience rather than the mainstream media such as commercial film and Television
Supporting individuals and community to speak their mind more open and produce their own truth and history independently
Putting the local context of social, cultural and political as staring point of creative process
B. Description of project
In this 3rd Ok. Video – Jakarta International Video Festival, we will try to develop a collaboration work among the artistic team of the festival with the participating artists or with the context of a certain public space. This collaboration work will try to get an artistic strategy that could fit with the context of the community, public and certain space. The theme of the 3rd Ok. Video Festival is “MILITIA”, means to empowered the civilians in a more organize way or by plan so it also mobilize and connected with some activity that push some changes which is initiated from itself. In this context, we relate this theme with the development of video as the medium in the society today. With this focus we will try to empowered people as technology media users to become more conscious towards the social situations in the surroundings.
The OK.Video Festivals will conceive into several programs:
1. Workshop series: 15 workshops in March until May 2007 in several cities in north coast of Java, Sulawesi, and Bali. It’s a collaborative and educative workshop that focus on empowered and learning lesson about the strength of video as a medium of expression, investigation tool and also as a reflection of social phenomena in the society.
2. Video Out: giving an alternative moving image in the public space that have been dominated by commercial images, by showing moving images with art and cultural content.
3. Video In: an exhibition held in National Gallery of Indonesia, showing selected National and International works that related to the theme of the festival.
4. Video Shop: We will create a commercial space / shop where we can show video works as an alternative program.
5. Discussion and artists’ talk: the discussion will invite several artists and collectives that have been working with the community and working with social political issue.
C. Implementation
1. Workshop; The Workshop participated by young artists, students, and various workers and general public. We will co-operate with every host organization, community, art center, or individuals in every city that we already have a network with or some co-operation before. The host will independently choose the participants of the workshops. It will be participated by around 10 persons. ruangrupa develop a module of workshop for 7 days that can be executed in every context of the city. The workshop conductor from ruangrupa will collaborate with the organization running workshop module. The process of workshops includes: introduction to the video medium, sharing experiences, investigate the problems of surroundings, brainstorming ideas, presentation, pre-production, production, and editing process.
2. Video out; Video showing in public space all video works shown in this program are a selection from local and international open entries.
Video out will be divided into:
Video Box – TV in a box will be placed at:
- Gambir, Jakarta Central Train Station (2 boxes), located in center part of Jakarta
- 3 Busway Shelter in three area in the center of Jakarta: Harmoni, Gambir, and National Monument (5 boxes)
Since 2004 in Jakarta we have new public transportation system called ‘busway’, this system quite successful with approx. 100.000 passengers (mostly workers) travel every month within only 3 lines crossing from West-East and South-North of Jakarta. It will be more lines soon in 2007.
Video screening on TV at the window display, it will be a cooperation with several offices, shops and cafÈ.
Video screening projection on a billboard, its almost impossible to project or screen video works in a commercial billboards or TV wall in the city, but we will project the video works on the big billboard in front of the National Gallery faced to the busy street.
3. Video In;
Venue: Galeri Nasional Indonesia – Jakarta (National Gallery Indonesia)
This is an exhibition program that will show:
1. Selected video works from 15 Workshop that has been held on March until May 2007.
2. Invited Video works that related to the theme of the festival. Video works that dealing with community based social political issue
3. TV Scratching (open submissions for local and international video works)
TV Scratching is the program title for a video work form that have been created or made from audiovisual footage/images taken or recorded from the TV programme. This video works will became a new audiovisual interpretation or audiences’ answer/statement towards TV culture.
It’s possible with any kind of editing technique, image manipulation with analog or digital, and it’s also possible to do a direct editing by zapping TV’s remote control.
The video works that will be shown in this programme is a selection from the video works submissions. The video works will be shown in one video compilation with one projection
The submissions of video works both from local and international will be open on February until 15 May 2007.

Make sure to put the detail of the source from the images or footage that taken
4. Video Shop; (open submissions for local and international video works)
We will create a commercial space / shop where we can show video works as an alternative program. The video works will be displayed and shown in 5 TVs and one projector at the video shop. The video works that will be shown in this programme is a selection from the video works submissions. Our aim is to interfere the commercial space by using their formula.
The submissions of video works both from local and international will be open on February until 15 May 2007.

E. Projected output of the project
Video works that focuses on local social and cultural context. Estimated production of 50 Video works from the 15 workshops with communities, students etc.
Video showing at the festival. Estimated 100 Video works National and international showing in 10 public place in Jakarta and the National Gallery.
Publication; catalogue with content of info on all video works and critical writings on art, technology, and community.
F. Target audience
Festival audiences: General public, young artists, students, art critics, and information technology and media professionals.
G. Dissemination of information
- We co-operate with several radio station that broadcasted in 8 different cities in Indonesia to inform the open submission for video works and also for the festival.
- Website, and links to other websites in Indonesia and International.
- Local and national TV ad, local and national Magazines and national newspaper for the festival information
- Printed: Posters, and flyers to inform the video works submission and the festival events.
H. Impact
The public will have more consciousness about the strength of video as a medium and its use for individuals and broader society
The public can explore their critical thought and expressing their creative ideas through video language
The Public will able to experiences video medium as a recorded life, history, way of learning, and investigating
The project endorse and sets up groups and community in several cities that work actively with video or new media and its relation with their surroundings
The targeted group can create a new possibilities to generate income by new skills on video production (recording, editing, renting, distribution etc)
Broader public can have an alternative references of audio-visual / moving images.
